I spend SO much of my work time sculpting things in ZBrush and modelling in 3D that I often realise I haven’t DRAWN anything for a really long time… So I try to challenge myself to do classes from time to time, whether they’re online courses or a life-drawing session etc… I’m always happy if i’m doing something that I feel is furthering my skills…
I took Peter Han’s ‘Dynamic Sketching 1’ class online at CGMA because A) it was sketching, from the very basics upwards and B) it was mostly traditional sketching with a REAL LIFE pen! And a pen, at that, which aside from not having an undo button doesn’t have an eraser either…
It was BRILLIANT – very challenging but really interesting to do!
Peter breaks down objects/animals into their very basic shapes and gets you to focus on the structure, building up from the larger shapes to the smaller details (and often focusing on one small section of detail to quickly convey a texture etc)
I don’t usually draw like this, let alone with a permanent PEN, but was really good fun…
As the class progressed, moved into looking at designing our own object (so naturally I went with a creature design) and thinking about it in different scenarios. I’d love to spend a bit of time finishing up my little bird creature (which pretends to be an orchid-like flower to attract insects which might accidentally sit in its mouth). These were doodled on the iPad Pro in the Procreate app and then messed about with a bit in Photoshop…
I took Peter’s ‘Dynamic Sketching 2’ class afterwards, which i’ll link to…
